the verb from the previous clause (katalambanō) to closely link his own goal of making perfection his possession (stated in the previous clause) with something that Christ Jesus has already done: made Paul his own. A more literal translation of this final clause would run something like ‘because I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.’ Likely the ESV has altered it from the passive to the active voice to make it clear to the English reader that Paul repeats the verb from the previous clause.
